چکیده
Abstract The volcanic Barva and Colima multiaquifer system is crucial for the drinking water supply of about 1.7 million people, 30% population in Costa Rica. complexity this simultaneous occurrence anthropogenic natural processes complicate understanding hydrochemical hydrogeological dynamics, both essential groundwater protection. This research aimed to develop a model discrimination groundwaters according main withdrawn aquifer flow path, assess interaquifer connections, evaluate governing quality. Samples (571) from 38 sampling sites, collected quarterly 2016 2020, were analyzed nitrate, major ions, silica. Principal component analysis discriminant exhibited validated sample grouping primary captured, i.e., Upper Barva, Lower Colima, two paths within aquifers. Hydrochemical statistical analyses showed resilience seasonal chemical variation deeper aquifers also three mixing processes. enriches bicarbonate, magnesium, calcium, sodium, silica, mainly due weathering mafic andesitic-basaltic lavas. higher silica ion content, except indicating longer residence times, dissolution felsic andesitic minerals, calcium adsorption by normal exchange. Weathering aluminosilicates process quality four studied aquifers, whereas cation exchange, leakage, might modify chemistry.

Fluid flow paths in the Middle America Trench and Costa Rica margin
The hydrology of the subducting plate and its dewatering behavior through the shallow subduction zone is linked to the structure and deformation of the forearc prism, the nature of the seismogenic zone, the composition of seawater for selected elements, and the composition of the residual slab subducted to depths of magma generation at the volcanic arc. Two locally independent systems of fluid ...
متن کاملPreferential Flow Paths
Laboratory soil column experiments were conducted to study the distribution of preferential flow paths resulting from removal of fine-size clay particles. These experiments specifically studied the influence of clay (kaolinite) percentage in sand-clay mixtures and the effect of hydraulic gradients on pore evolution. Analysis of the effluent during the experiments indicated that clay particles w...

متن کاملEthnicity, gene flow, and population subdivision in Limón, Costa Rica.
In this paper we examine the effects of ethnicity on the gene flow between two groups living in Limón, Costa Rica. Our main interest is to determine if ethnicity has acted as a barrier to the exchange of genes, and if the groups have remained distinct genetically. We report the admixture estimates, F(st) values, and inbreeding coefficients of the two samples. The data consist of blood samples a...
متن کاملCancer in Costa Rica.
Data from the national tumor registry of Costa Rica for the years 1979-1983 have been used to calculate incidence rates for the major cancer sites by age, sex, urban-rural residence, and geographic region. Recent trends in mortality rates are also presented. Results are compared with data from elsewhere in Latin America, U.S.A., Europe, and Japan. Stomach cancer is the most frequent neoplasm in...
